What is a tummy tuck?

Abdominoplasty in Madrid Spain is a complex surgical procedure that uses a combination of different techniques, which can solve problems such as excess skin, fat and muscle tension in the abdomen to reshape the waist, abdomen and trunk areas.

Generally, the people who undergo this procedure the most are women who suffer from abdominal flaccidity after pregnancy. The skin in that area is affected, resulting in excess skin and stretch marks.

It is also possible for women who have given birth several times in a row to have diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscle. In both cases abdominoplasty can correct the anomalies.

Another common case in which the use of abdominoplasty is common is when the patient has suffered morbid obesity and has undergone a surgery or procedure where the weight loss was very large. This would leave as a result an excess of skin in the abdominal area, which will remain hanging.

Abdominoplasty is not a way to lose weight, in fact, it is recommended that the person undergoing abdominoplasty be at their ideal weight.

It is a surgery designed for people who, in spite of having a weight according to their size, have abdominal flaccidity or muscular defects in the abdomen.

This procedure may eradicate some stretch marks, but it is not intended for this purpose either. On the other hand, it is recommended that women who undergo this procedure refrain from becoming pregnant again, as the results of the surgery will be lost.

What is abdominoplasty surgery like?

The first step of the procedure is the application of anesthesia. Usually, the two sedation techniques used in these procedures are general anesthesia and epidural anesthesia. The technique to be used will depend on your body and the decision of the anesthesiologist, who will choose the best option for you.

After anesthesia the surgeon will proceed to make an incision, the size, number and location of the incisions depend on the patient's condition. The incisions can be in the hips, below or above the navel, and can even be circular in the central abdomen.

In any of the above cases, the surgeon will try to make them in an area where they are easy to hide or go unnoticed.

After making the corresponding incisions, the surgeon will begin to remove the excess fat and skin. This procedure is called Dermolipectomy and the amount of fat and skin removed will depend on the patient's condition.

After removing the fat and excess skin, the rectus abdominis muscles are sutured together. As we mentioned before, during pregnancy they can separate forming a hernia.

As a penultimate step, the surgeon will fix the excess skin and stretch it down to make it taut and remove the excess volume. If the navel had to be removed during the procedure, the surgeon will perform a neoumbilicoplasty, which refers to creating a new navel.

Liposuction can also be performed on the hips or sides of the abdomen to better sculpt the figure. This is only if the surgeon deems it necessary.

As a last step, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures, some place surgical drains as a precaution, in case fluids appear under the skin in the healing process.

The duration of this process will depend on the complexity of the patient's case. It can last between 2 to 4 hours. It is normal that after the procedure you will have to stay in the hospital for 1 to 3 days.

Complete recovery from abdominoplasty can last between 4 to 6 weeks, but it is advisable not to do physical exertion or exercise for at least 3 months.

What does the tummy look like after a tummy tuck?

The results of an abdominoplasty can be seen within 3 to 6 months , but the waiting time is worth it. Since patients after undergoing this procedure get a great change.

Your abdomen becomes flatter, toned and its contours are more defined. In addition, the patient will have a more defined waist and a much firmer abdomen free of hanging skin and excess fat. Also, as a side effect, some stretch marks may be eliminated. But you must take into account one aspect that is the scars.

READ What should you know before undergoing abdominoplasty?

The issue of scars is somewhat complex, since it will depend a lot on the extent of the procedure. The location and visibility of the scars will vary according to the location, size and technique used to make the incision.

If you have a partial abdominoplasty it will only leave a small, inconspicuous scar, but if you have a larger procedure the scar will be proportional.

It should be noted that the surgeon takes these aspects into consideration before making the incisions. So most of the scars can be covered by underwear. With proper care they will eventually become less noticeable, but may not disappear completely.

It is important that before undergoing this surgery you do your research and be sure of what you want. Besides having real expectations of what you aspire, depending on what you want, it may be necessary to have another complementary procedure such as liposuction or liposculpture.
