If you wish to improve the appearance of your abdomen, you have probably considered aesthetic surgery to repair your abdominal muscles and eliminate skin laxity. Unfortunately, not everyone can undergo this procedure, which is why we want to address the question of whether you can have an abdominoplasty with overweight. For attractive and safe results, your body must meet certain requirements. In this article, we explain which patients are good candidates.

What is an abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, or abdominal surgery, is a surgical procedure that aims to reshape the abdominal area by removing accumulated fat deposits and loose skin. This type of surgery also tightens the abdominal wall muscles to achieve better results.

Aesthetic and functional objectives

Achieving a firm and flat abdomen, improving body contour, defining the waistline, and reducing stretch marks are the aesthetic objectives of an abdominoplasty.

From a functional perspective, an abdominoplasty allows correction of diastasis recti or separation of the abdominal muscles, stabilizes the core, and thereby improves posture. In some patients, stress urinary incontinence can also be improved.

Types of abdominoplasty

  1. Traditional abdominoplasty. This is the standard abdominal surgery in which the surgeon removes fat and excess skin from the abdominal area, then tightens the connective tissue to achieve a firm and flat abdomen.
  2. Extended abdominoplasty. This involves incisions made around the waist in a circumferential pattern. This type of abdominoplasty covers areas such as the waist and hips, improving body contour more comprehensively.
  3. Mini abdominoplasty. This is a variant of abdominoplasty that focuses on improving the lower half of the abdomen by removing only a small amount of skin tissue from the upper pubic area and correcting laxity of the abdominal muscles in the lower abdomen. It is a less invasive option with faster recovery.

What is the appropriate BMI for surgery?

As you know, your weight alone is not sufficient to determine whether you are obese. Obesity depends on other factors such as height.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement that can guide us regarding excess body fat. It is calculated by dividing weight (in kilograms) by height (in meters) squared. It helps us determine whether we are at an appropriate weight for our specific build.

BMI between 25‑29.9

Values between 25 and 29.9 indicate overweight; with these figures, surgery can be considered, but the surgeon must perform a comprehensive patient evaluation and consider other factors before confirming whether you are an appropriate candidate for surgery.

BMI ≥30 and medical contraindications

A BMI of 30 or higher indicates obesity and contraindication for surgery.

Ideal BMI (18.5‑24.9)

The best scenario is for your BMI to be between 18.5 and 24.9, which are the ideal parameters for surgery. And also for your overall health.

Online you will find multiple BMI calculators to easily determine yours. If you have obesity and want abdominoplasty, you now know your BMI must drop below 30. Start losing weight and use this number as a guide for your progress. It will help you stay motivated and evaluate your advancement.

Can you have an abdominoplasty with overweight?

You should know that abdominoplasty is not indicated in patients with obesity. An abdomen with excessive fat will never achieve good results.

LEER  What is the price of otoplasty?

First, for safety reasons. Obesity carries significant risk of operative complications. These complications can be general (thrombosis, infection, respiratory problems) as well as related to scarring.

Second, for aesthetic reasons. Obese individuals have excessive fat both inside and outside the abdominal wall. Surgery removes the fat outside the abdominal wall, but not the fat inside. Operating on such an abdomen would result in a protruding appearance. The result, aside from being risky, is aesthetically unacceptable.

In obese patients, we cannot achieve the main objectives of abdominoplasty. The muscles cannot be properly repaired, and the abdomen cannot achieve a flattened appearance.

However, we must clarify that obesity is not the same as overweight. To distinguish these terms, we use BMI; very high values indicate obesity, slightly lower figures are classified as overweight, such as 25‑29.9, although the ideal would be between 18.5‑24.9.

While obese patients should not undergo surgery, abdominoplasty can be considered with overweight if the BMI is not very high. Also if you enjoy good health, and your surgeon verifies that you do not have excessive intra-abdominal fat.

Benefits of surgery within the appropriate range

Better scarring and faster recovery

Having an appropriate BMI for abdominal surgery means the person is in better physical condition. Recovery times are typically shorter.

More effective aesthetic results

Surgery results under these conditions can be maintained long-term because the patient maintains a more stable weight.

Lower risk of postoperative complications

People with overweight may have a higher risk of infections, bleeding, scarring problems, and blood clots after surgery due to their condition. By undergoing surgery with an optimal BMI, these risks are significantly reduced.

Risks of abdominoplasty in overweight patients

Overweight patients not only may experience unexpected results following an abdominoplasty, but are also exposed to greater risks.

Common complications and how to prevent them

The complications to which an overweight patient who undergoes abdominoplasty may be exposed include a higher risk of infections and bleeding. This is due to the greater amount of fatty tissue and blood vessels in the treated area.

They also have a greater possibility of suffering respiratory problems or venous thrombosis, which is due to inactivity following surgery. Having greater adipose tissue can lead to poor scarring.

Proper preparation for abdominoplasty surgery can prevent these complications. Although the patient is overweight, they can begin to eat healthily and perform some physical activity prior to surgery. Additionally, it is important to quit smoking.

Special considerations for recovery

Due to being overweight, patients may require a longer recovery time than a patient with a normal BMI. They should also consider the risks we have discussed, such as infections, bleeding, or respiratory problems.

Furthermore, this type of patient may require more frequent postoperative care and follow-up visits with the surgeon to ensure that the recovery process is developing as expected.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for an abdominoplasty?

weight loss

Abdominoplasty candidates typically have diastasis recti. This means that the abdominal muscles have become stretched due to pregnancies, overexertion, or excess weight. This usually does not cause pain or discomfort. However, it does create a protruding, bulging appearance in the abdomen. Its repair during abdominoplasty allows not only a defined waist, but also greater strength in the abdomen.

LEER  How Much Does a BBL Cost?

In the case of female patients, it is best to have surgery after pregnancies. Becoming pregnant after an abdominoplasty is possible, but not recommended, as it can cause recurrence of diastasis recti.

The ideal abdominoplasty candidate has skin laxity on the front of the abdomen. In cases of extreme weight loss, the skin can sag in other areas (back, flanks, etc.). In these situations, abdominoplasty alone is not sufficient and more aggressive surgeries must be performed to eliminate sagging (lower body lift, truncal lift, etc.).

The ideal abdominoplasty candidate must not smoke. Tobacco greatly increases surgery-related problems. Wounds heal poorly and cause more issues. And worse still, it increases the possibility of serious complications such as thrombosis and respiratory problems. It’s always a good time to quit smoking, but if you want to have surgery, there’s even more reason to do so!

The ideal abdominoplasty candidate typically has lost a significant amount of weight in the past. However, at the time of surgery, they must have maintained a stable weight for several months. And they must be capable of maintaining this weight for an extended period of time.

Similarly, they need to have reasonable expectations regarding the surgery. They should understand that abdominoplasty removes excess loose skin, but is not intended as a weight loss procedure.

They should also be aware that results will deteriorate if they do not maintain a diet and exercise routine after surgery. Finally, the surgery should be a personal desire, not the will of family members or a partner.

Taking anticoagulant medication, diabetes, previous abdominal surgeries… can
slightly increase the risk of complications. However, they are not a reason not to undergo surgery. You simply need to discuss this with your surgeon during the initial consultation.

What is the ideal weight for abdominoplasty?

There is no ideal weight for abdominoplasty. A very tall patient may weigh 80 kg and not be obese. However, a very short patient weighing 80 kg is likely to be overweight. That’s why your weight is not the best parameter to control whether you can have surgery or not. It depends on more factors, such as height, and whether you have excess weight.

Another important detail is the distribution of fat in the abdomen. In general, excess fat is not good for surgery. But ultimately, the worst scenario is when fat accumulation is located within the abdominal wall. Your surgeon will assess the distribution of your fat during consultation.

They will also take precise measurements of height and weight to determine if you are a good surgical candidate.

How to lose weight for an abdominoplasty?

On your journey toward a correct BMI, diet and exercise play a fundamental role. The first step is to identify those foods that are most harmful to your health and eliminate them completely. Try to eat 3 or 4 meals per day, but in smaller quantities than before, and without unhealthy products.

You should avoid industrial pastries, precooked meals, fried foods, and products with too much sugar. Avoid excessive salt in your meals, as it will cause you to retain fluids.

Losing weight for an abdominoplasty is important, but even more important is ensuring that your diet provides all the necessary nutrients. For this surgery, you need adequate reserves of vitamins, oligoelements, proteins, and iron. That’s why, in addition to losing weight, your diet needs to be varied and healthy. You should consume fruits, vegetables, meat or fish, legumes, whole grains…

LEER  What should you know before an abdominoplasty?

Exercise is another key pillar if you want to lose weight before undergoing an abdominoplasty. If you have never been very athletic, start gradually. Begin by going for walks, and later progress to running. The exercise doesn’t need to be intense, but it should be sustained, allowing time for fat burning.

Aerobic exercise will help you lose weight. It will also improve your respiratory and cardiovascular system. Once you reach a weight associated with an appropriate BMI, it is important that you make an effort to maintain it. Diet and exercise remain fundamental.

How much weight do you lose after an abdominoplasty?

Weight loss should not be your goal with an abdominoplasty. An abdominoplasty is designed to repair abdominal muscle and eliminate sagging skin, not for weight loss. The skin removed during surgery typically weighs more than 500 grams, but usually does not exceed 3,000 grams.

If combined with liposuction, it is possible that weight loss may be greater. However, I repeat, this is not the objective of the procedure. Achieving the appropriate weight should happen before the surgery.

Recovery and post-operative care for overweight patients

Tips for a healthy recovery

Those patients who, although overweight, undergo an abdominoplasty because the surgeon considers they do not have excessive body fat, are in good health, and their BMI is not too high, need to take good care of themselves during the recovery process to avoid complications.

It is essential to rest for the first few days after surgery and take the medications prescribed by your surgeon. Both recommendations are related to reducing pain and swelling. Additionally, wearing a compression garment will help keep the skin and tissues in their new position.

Drinking enough water and maintaining a healthy diet are also essential during this process. Water and fluids help reduce inflammation, and a balanced, healthy diet should become a new habit for the patient, as it is the way to have a better post-operative recovery and to maintain the results of surgery in the long term.

Activities and limitations post-surgery

Regarding limitations, it is important not to lift heavy objects or engage in activities or exercises that require too much effort. This way, you can avoid problems with the incisions or other complications.

As recovery progresses, it is necessary to include exercise in your daily routine. You can start with gentle, short walks and gradually increase the intensity, or incorporate other exercises such as cycling.

You should also avoid smoking, as this increases the risk of infections and scar healing problems.

Remember the importance of scheduling follow-up visits with your surgeon to ensure that the entire recovery process is carried out properly.

Now you know whether an abdominoplasty can be performed with overweight, and some recommendations to become an ideal candidate for this procedure. It is key to always consult with expert surgeons who will guide you throughout the process. Contact us to request an assessment.
