Body contouring surgery aims to remove excess skin and subcutaneous tissue that remains after weight loss. This brings about both aesthetic and functional improvement, relieving the discomfort associated with excess skin. It may consist of a single procedure or a combination of procedures chosen according to the areas affected and the patient’s needs.

Significant weight losses have consequences such as skin and adipose tissue flaps that affect the patient’s quality of life. By eliminating them, physical appearance improves, but chafing can be relieved, hygiene can be facilitated, and certain limitations can be improved.

When can excess skin after weight loss be surgically treated?

Not all people are candidates for removing excess skin through surgery. Generally, a significant weight loss is required, but this does not apply in all cases, as the excess skin, weight stability, and state of health are taken into account.

If the person undergoes this procedure while still losing weight, the skin will lose firmness again and sag after the procedure, compromising the results obtained.

In the event that the patient has undergone bariatric surgery, weight stabilization and recovery and adequate nutritional status must be waited for before entering the operating room to remove skin.

Medical assessment is essential to determine the ideal time to undergo surgery. This includes having an adequate nutritional status, with good general health and having realistic expectations.

What areas can be treated and with what procedures?

The excess skin that remains after weight loss can be treated with different surgeries:

  • Abdomen: with an abdominoplasty, mini-abdominoplasty or abdominal lipectomy, excess skin can be removed and, when there is muscle separation, the abdominal wall can be repaired using the appropriate technique.
  • Waist, flanks and back: lower body lift or circumferential lipectomy removes skin around the trunk.
  • Buttocks: buttock lift, sometimes combined with waist remodeling or fat transfer when safe.
  • Chest: breast lift is a good option; furthermore, it can include implants if there is significant volume loss. In men, gynecomastia correction can be performed to treat excess breast tissue.
  • Arms: brachioplasty or arm lift.
  • Inner thighs: thigh lift or cruroplasty.
  • Outer thighs and hips: lower body lift or combination with other techniques.
  • Pubis: lift or lipectomy of the pubic area, often together with abdominoplasty.
  • Face and neck: facelift or neck lift when there is significant facial sagging after weight loss.

Not all patients need the same surgeries. The surgeon evaluates the person and together with them decides which procedures will be performed. To do this, where the tissue accumulates, the amount and quality of skin are taken into account.

Can procedures be combined or is it better to do them in stages?

It is possible to combine several procedures in a single intervention. However, this does not mean that all should be done together. It is common to combine abdominoplasty with breast lift or arm lift. It is also common to perform lipectomy together with pubis correction.

Other possible combinations are body lift with thigh lift, or brachioplasty also with thigh lift.

Planning is key when several procedures are to be performed. Factors to be taken into account include surgical times, the extent of surgery and individual risks, so it will be decided which procedures can be combined.

Likewise, when there is massive weight loss, it is recommended that procedures be performed in several stages. The appropriate time between one and another intervention will be determined by the surgeon, established based on scarring, general recovery and the patient’s nutritional status.

How much does body contouring surgery after weight loss cost? 2026 Prices

It is not possible to give a single price for body contouring surgery, as this includes several procedures. It also depends on the areas treated, the amount of excess skin, whether it is combined with liposuction, hospitalization, among other factors. However, we can offer indicative prices for the different treatments it includes:

How is recovery and what scars remain?

The total recovery time depends on the procedures performed. In general, body contouring surgery after weight loss requires one or several days of hospitalization. Patients will wear compression garments for the first few weeks and can resume activities that do not require effort after three to six weeks. To perform intense physical activities, you must wait at least eight weeks or as indicated by the surgeon, and they should be resumed progressively.

During recovery it is normal to have swelling, which will decrease over the first few months. The final result can take up to a year or more to define.

On the other hand, having to remove skin, it is inevitable that scars remain. However, the surgeon seeks to place them in natural creases or areas that can be covered with clothing.
