But to understand better what it involves, we explain how a facelift is performed.

Preparing for surgery

As with any other surgical procedure, a face lift requires preparation beforehand, which will be set out by the surgeon when planning the operation.

The doctor will need to review the patient’s medical history. To do so they will ask you a series of questions about your physical condition and past and present illnesses. They will also need to know whether you have had surgery before, including cosmetic procedures.

The surgeon will carry out a physical examination and will ask for blood tests at a laboratory and a pre-surgical assessment.

A facial examination is compulsory, which includes, besides analysing the bones, skin and fat of the face, photographs of the face at different angles and positions. Thanks to this assessment the surgeon will be able to determine the best procedure for the facelift.

If you smoke, the doctor will ask you to stop smoking for a while before and after the operation.

The doctor may even stop some medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatories, painkillers, anticoagulants or herbal remedies. This is in order to minimise the risk of bruising or heavy bleeding. They may also adjust some doses.

It is very important to tell the doctor honestly, at the pre-operative assessment, about every medication you take.

The patient will also have to stop using beauty products, face creams and make-up.

Because the procedure may be done under general anaesthetic, you will not be able to go home on your own. So you will need the support or help of a friend or relative, both when leaving surgery and during the first days of recovery.

How is a facelift performed?

The procedure the surgeon will follow to perform a facelift in Madrid is as follows:

To begin the surgery the anaesthetic has to be administered, which may be local intravenous sedation or general anaesthetic. The type of anaesthetic used will depend on what the doctor considers most appropriate.

There are three types of incision and they depend on the technique the surgeon uses to perform the facelift. It will also depend on each patient, and on the results expected. They are:

The traditional incision runs from the temple, around the ears, to the hairline behind the ears.

The limited incision is a little shorter than the previous one, since it follows the same route from the temple towards the ear, but does not extend behind the ear. It is used in mini facelifts.

The other type of incision is the one used when the facelift includes a neck lift. For that, the cut starts in front of the earlobe, runs around the rest of the ear and reaches the lower part of the scalp. Plus a small incision under the chin.

The way these cuts are made means that once healed there are no visible marks left, since they are hidden in the natural contour of the face and the ears.

To finish the surgery, after stretching the skin and removing the excess, the surgeon will go on to close the incisions. This is done using dissolvable sutures, special surgical glue or sutures the surgeon will need to remove a few days after the procedure.

Finally, the surgeon will place a dressing around the face and some surgical drains.

This procedure on its own can take between 3 and 6 hours, but if other cosmetic procedures are included, such as a bichectomy or a chin implant, it may take longer.

After a face lift

Once the procedure is over, the patient may experience discomfort and pain, as well as swelling and some bruising. To treat this the doctor may prescribe a painkiller.

Before going home the surgeon will tell you when the dressing and the drains can be removed, and will schedule a follow-up appointment, which you must attend so the progress of the surgery can be reviewed.

If in the following 24 hours you notice an unusual heartbeat, severe pain in the face or neck, or chest pain, you must contact your treating doctor immediately.

You may need a couple of weeks to get back to your usual routine. But to take up physical activity again you will have to wait a few weeks more. This is for guidance only. Instructions about rest time will be given by the doctor according to each patient.

Swelling in the face may remain for a few months, and it is only after the swelling goes down that the patient will really be able to see the result of the surgery.

A little extra care for your face will help you keep the results of the facelift for longer. For example: daily moisturising, using sun protection and drinking plenty of water.

A balanced diet, as well as sleeping well and for the right number of hours, will also help your face keep looking fresh and youthful.

Although you should remember that you need to expect realistic results and that you will have to wait for the skin to return to normal to know whether your expectations have been met.

There are other additional surgical procedures that can be done at the same time as facial rejuvenation, which can complement it and give a more striking result. Such as an implant or fat transfer to the face. Other procedures can also be done, such as rhinoplasty in Madrid.

Or you could undergo treatments to rejuvenate the skin of the face, have subdermal fillers injected, or remove fat from the face through a bichectomy in Madrid.

Knowing what a facelift involves and how it is performed means you have more information when it comes to surgery, as well as realistic expectations of what you can achieve with this procedure. If you have more questions, consult an experienced surgeon.

Also known as a rhytidectomy or face lift, this is a surgical procedure that stretches and firms the skin of the face, removing sagging; and the deeper tissues are tightened. This is how a more youthful appearance is achieved.
